Go green this spring with composite decks!

Build green with composite decks

Hello,

Whether you are building new or just improving on what you have, consider going green the spring with green building products.

Now that spring is growing closer, a lot of homeowners will start to spend most of their time outdoors working on their homes. For the last couple of years, the trend of homeowners are leading more so towards green building materials, such as “Composite decking. If your looking to add value to your home and also, create a low-maintenance deck, than this choice in green materials is your answer!

Also know as “plastic-wood” composite decking is made from recycled wood and plastic as an environmentally friendly option that is growing in popularity. Benefits like durability, color and low- maintenance have increased the replacement of natural wood for your deck. Other benefits, Composite decking doesn’t require painting and staining. The only maintenance that needs to be done to composite decks is to wash it a couple times a year to avoid mildew. Composite decking will cost you about 25-35 percent more depending on choice over traditional pressure-treated decking. In the long run, the amount of money you save and low-maintenance quality out weights the up front costs.

Learn how to roof with these tips

Hello DIYers,

Here are some tips on asphalt roofing, with more to follow. This example will be for a straight forward roof, no Hips or Valleys.

The first thing you want to do is, calculate the amount of shingles needed by measuring the width of the roof, followed by measuring up from the gutter-line to the ridge of your roof. I.e  length of roof equals 32′ wide and from the gutter-line to the ridge equals 15′ feet. Take those numbers and times by two, plus add 10% more shingles for waste.

More tips to come, please stay tuned and subscribe to my blog..

Mahogany Deck wrapped in Pine

Hello again,

I’ve decided to finally post some past projects of mine and I hope all of you fellow readers can enjoy. I want to show you what time, dedication and craftsmanship goes into the quality of work I build.

In the fist photo, you’ll will see the frame of the deck is up and the pre-painted pine is on. If you look closely, you’ll also see that I don’t skimp on framing stairs! A lot of times you’ll see stairs with only 3 stringers, I always build with 4 or more and always 16″ on-center for added strength.

My concrete footing are always below the frost line 42″ and 6″ above soil grade to Massachusetts state codes.

Galvanized nails were used in the framing of this deck and also galvanized joist hangers and nails. Copper flashing and vycor flashing as always, and stainless screws for the decking.

Stage 3 of contruction

Here, you’ll see the final stage of completion. Mahogany decking down, railings up and built to last! A beautiful custom mahogany deck, built by MBM Construction, Attleboro, Ma. 02703.

How to build a deck part 2

Hello,

If you have read my earlier post on how to flash a deck ledger board, you can move onto this step.

Once the ledger-board has been correctly  installed you can move onto the layout procedures.

What do I mean by that?

You want to establish your 16″ o.c ( 16″ on-center-layout) to ensure equal  spacing for your decking.

To do this, simply hook your tape to the left side or right side of the ledger board. Then move away from the hooked end and start marking 16, 32, 48, and so forth with an X back method.

Now, if you have already framed your box up and are ready to layout the joists, you’ll need to start your layout differently.

What do I mean by that?

You’ll need to hook your tape to the outer joist and begin the layout from there vs’ laying out from the ledger without the joist in place. So start by making marks as followed: 15 1/4,  31 1/4,  47 1/4, so forth, always subtracting 3/4 of an inch from the centers.

I hope this helps.. If not, you know the drill!

Thanks..

Ice dam prevention tip

I posted earlier this week about Ice dams and how to prevent them. If you scroll down the page you’ll see other Ice dam prevention tips.

Here is another tip:

To reduce Ice dams even further, invest in buying a ” roof- snow removal rake.” When I go out on Ice dam repairs, I’ll use this rake to remove as much snow as I can before I chip away the Ice.

This tip will greatly reduce your chances of roof leaks and dangerous Icicles forming above the doorways and the  gutter line of your roof.

MBM Construction, would be happy to assist you in Ice dam prevention and removal, just visit us at our website for more information, & click on the free estimate link and follow the instructions.
