How to build a deck part 2
3. February 2009 by admin.
Hello,
If you have read my earlier post on how to flash a deck ledger board, you can move onto this step.
Once the ledger-board has been correctly installed you can move onto the layout procedures.
What do I mean by that?
You want to establish your 16″ o.c ( 16″ on-center-layout) to ensure equal spacing for your decking.
To do this, simply hook your tape to the left side or right side of the ledger board. Then move away from the hooked end and start marking 16, 32, 48, and so forth with an X back method.
Now, if you have already framed your box up and are ready to layout the joists, you’ll need to start your layout differently.
What do I mean by that?
You’ll need to hook your tape to the outer joist and begin the layout from there vs’ laying out from the ledger without the joist in place. So start by making marks as followed: 15 1/4, 31 1/4, 47 1/4, so forth, always subtracting 3/4 of an inch from the centers.
I hope this helps.. If not, you know the drill!
Thanks..

Ice dam prevention tip
3. February 2009 by admin.
I posted earlier this week about Ice dams and how to prevent them. If you scroll down the page you’ll see other Ice dam prevention tips.
Here is another tip:
To reduce Ice dams even further, invest in buying a ” roof- snow removal rake.” When I go out on Ice dam repairs, I’ll use this rake to remove as much snow as I can before I chip away the Ice.
This tip will greatly reduce your chances of roof leaks and dangerous Icicles forming above the doorways and the gutter line of your roof.
MBM Construction, would be happy to assist you in Ice dam prevention and removal, just visit us at our website for more information, & click on the free estimate link and follow the instructions.

Screwed down deck vs nailed down decking
3. February 2009 by admin.
Hello,
When installing decking I always prefer to screw down my decking boards as apposed to nailing them, unless otherwise the homeowner prefers the traditional method.
What are my reasons?
when I occasionally go out and do some minor deck repairs, I 9 out of 10 times run into problems such as: the decking boards are popping up or loose or the decking boards are cupping and warping!
My solution to this problem is to screw the decking boards down, period!
If you decking of choice is pressure-treated lumber, use coated exterior deck screws or “deckmate” screws as they are called.
If you have mahogany decking, use hex styled stainless screws.
The moral of the story, is to use screws to prevent warping, cupping and to keep deck boards “firm.”

Thanks again!
