Screwed down deck vs nailed down decking

Hello,

When installing decking I always prefer to screw down my decking boards as apposed to nailing them, unless otherwise the homeowner prefers the traditional method.

What are my reasons?

when I occasionally go out and do some minor deck repairs, I 9 out of 10 times run into problems such as: the decking boards are popping up or loose or the decking boards are cupping and warping!

My solution to this problem is to screw the decking boards down, period!

If you decking of choice is pressure-treated lumber, use coated exterior deck screws or “deckmate” screws as they are called.

If you have mahogany decking, use hex styled stainless screws.

The moral of the story, is to use screws to prevent warping, cupping and to keep deck boards “firm.”
